Our Heritage work has been a key ingredient to our success within the heritage building environment due to our keen eye for detail and knowledge and understanding of the historical importance of the buildings within the Portsmouth Dockyard.

We have carried out many listed building repairs with the approval of English Heritage and BAE Systems’s Conservation team. These works include The Blockmills building repairs, Boundary wall repairs and repairs to historic gates at Victory Gate not to mention the numerous window replacement and repairs carried out around the base.  Blockmills were built in the Napoleonic Wars to supply the Royal Navy with pulley blocks. They started the age of mass-production using all-metal machine tools and are regarded as one of the seminal buildings of the British Industrial Revolution. They are also the site of the first stationary steam engines used by the Admiralty.

One of our most prestigious Heritage projects within the Historical Dockyard, was preparing and decorating HMS Victory, Nelsons Flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, back to its original colours. In 2015, samples were taken, and it was discovered that the existing paintwork was not the same as the original colour.   S&J were successful in securing the task, working in conjunction with the Heritage team and BAE Systems, of transforming the ship back to its original colours. The work was planned, phased and completed on schedule, despite the challenges from the typical  inclement English weather.
